DrupalCon New Orleans 2016: From 4 releases per year to 4 releases per day

This session presents a case study detailing the significant improvements made to the delivery process of a large government web platform by implementing automation. The European Commission's transition to Drupal for their internal websites resulted in a vast Drupal 7 distribution that supports over 70 sites developed by a diverse team of 200 developers. The speaker discusses the shift from a manual workflow to fully automated continuous deployment, covering topics such as transitioning from SVN to Git, adopting the successful Git branching model, and enhancing accessibility for external contractors through the use of third-party services. Additionally, this talk highlights innovations in quality assurance, including the use of static analysis to catch bad code early, the implementation of automated tests with Behat, and the deployment of ephemeral acceptance servers on Amazon AWS. Techniques for automating Drupal site builds using tools like Drush Make, Composer, and Phing are also explored, along with the introduction of a standardized starter kit for rapid website creation and the incorporation of continuousphp to streamline delivery pipelines.
