When Observability Meets a Tamagotchi

TamaGROTchi is Grafana's hackathon-winning digital pet — a Tamagotchi powered by Grot (Grafana's dinosaur mascot), built on an ESP32 board, and fully observable via OpenTelemetry logs, traces, and metrics sent directly to Grafana Cloud.

In this GrafanaCON talk, Chris and Nick from Grafana explain how TamaGROTchi tackles a genuine IoT challenge: how do you instrument small, resource-constrained devices that can't run a full OTel collector or SDK? Their answer — serialize a raw JSON OpenTelemetry packet and POST it over HTTP to Grafana Cloud — applies directly to warehouse robots, EPOS terminals, and any hardware with limited memory or unreliable connectivity. They also walk through why signal selection matters: starting with just a binary "sick" metric couldn't answer who let the pet get sick or how; adding per-button-press logs and traces unlocked a far richer dashboard suite. TamaGROTchi is wired up to Grafana's Knowledge Graph with custom SLOs (including mean time to feed), RED metrics, and a Grafana Assistant integration that gets noticeably upset when you neglect it.
