About this talk
Session name: Testing Documentation: Why So Technical?
Speaker: Ana Duarte
Session Description: As a Technical Documentation Manager, Ana Duarte navigates the ongoing challenge of making software documentation truly accessible. Documenting software products is never straightforward. Writing helpful instructions for others is inherently difficult—after all, we are not our users, and we don't share their exact context or experiences. This disconnect can lead to documentation that lacks clarity and meaning.
Testing documentation, in particular, often falls into this trap. It frequently overwhelms users with technical detail while failing to explain the “why” behind the “how.” But testing documentation can—and should—be both technical and relatable. Ana’s approach is about breaking down abstractions (was: abstraction) and making documentation not just functional, but understandable and meaningful.
A key strategy she champions is the use of concrete examples. From a young age, people learn through stories, analogies, and practical demonstrations—and this remains true in professional settings. Too often, testing documentation lacks real-life usage scenarios, examples, and stories that bring the content to life. This isn’t about adding flair for the sake of it; it’s about giving documentation depth and relevance. It’s about explaining not just how to start a testing session, but why the action matters. Not just stating that a tool supports exploratory testing and charter writing, but also clarifying how to write an effective charter, and why it benefits both the individual and the team.
From exploring testing sessions to crafting meaningful charters, Ana focuses on real-world stories and daily scenarios that make testing documentation more human and helpful. Her goal is to help teams transform documentation into a user-friendly, relatable resource. The future of testing documentation lies in striking a balance—being technically accurate, but grounded in the user's reality. Ana shows how to get there, one example at a time."
