[Music] ladies and Gentlemen please welcome our next speaker P Luigi meloney presenting the topic you're a great coder that alone won't get you far the soft skill Secret in 9 sucess uh actually I didn't bring any laser show but uh I like the laser show and reminded me a bit of a after hour party so if you like to serve the drinks first I'll be in okay

I think that's how you say it right thank you uh you're a great coder well that's good for you but I guess that alone won't get you very far um let me introduce myself first um my name is Pier Luigi Mone and as you can tell from my name I am from Germany v that's how you say it why um I have Italian Origins and as the

Germans have problems pronouncing my name as well and maybe my name is not logical enough for them I am GG so it's nice to meet you um just brief introduction Ricky already said it I'm a tech guy probably just like you I started off as a student I studied computer science then worked as a software developer and specialized in software architecture but then I changed sides and

I went into management first as a PO then product management and stuff like that and finally battled my ranks up to become a sea level of a couple of companies the companies were pretty much Pharma Ai and e-commerce then I jumped off the corporate train and founded my own company it's called other skills and it's an e-learning company the thing is it's one would say it's quite

a decent career I came around a bit but I have to tell you the truth I'm not the most most talented computer scientists in the world there are probably many of you are more talented than I am but the thing I always considered pretty easy was uh to make a career and that was strange because I saw many of my friends and colleagues struggle struggle a lot

and getting frustrated at a certain point of time and I was eager to find out why why is that so what's going on there and uh I started studying it I went around and uh I conducted hundreds of interviews with experts uh from the area pretty much um every level like developers Architects the sea levels the management whatever and I asked them uh what helped you what

are your tricks is there anything you can tell me like for example which advice would you give yourself at the beginning of your career and the collection we made was uh pretty interesting but there was one thing like a topic a red line that evolved through all the answers and that is pretty much that everyone said technical skills and coding is very important it's a requirement you

have to have it to get into the industry but it doesn't set you apart because it's also very common and therefore not special everybody has it instead what sets you apart are pretty much the skills Beyond code and skills Beyond code are stuff like people skills especially communication skills you're working together all the time and the challenge is communicating Tech to non- techn kill people it's about

process know how you know having the right attitude for something like that and a professional execution and of course business acum because in the end everything is about money so um the thing is it's actually no shock that actually it is it is shocking how much these skills are missing I have to say even among seniors you you you don't find it pretty often but it's not

really a shock that they are not so present because in universities or classical train trainings we don't teach that stuff a lot did you have communication classes or something like that in University yes at least one another one maybe can we make it up to five we have two three come on give me two more next one gets free drink but you're not computer scientists are you

you are very good okay you get you get my free drink ticket anyway and but it makes sense our industry is really really technology driven I studied the program of this conference as well and at this conference is about 10% of talks that are not related to code directly and most of them have to do with the you know process stuff it's always the agile thing and

the thing is that these numbers can be backed up by statistics there's an Institute in the United States it's called the icims hiring Institute and what they do is they bring people into labor so that means they recruit Engineers for software companies and they help them also when it's about promotions and you know getting the filled and they have large studies with huge numbers and 94% of

their recruiters believe that people with higher soft skills are way more likely to be promoted than people with more years of experience but weaker soft skills that's the senior problem this this is when when it happens you stay senior for so long and you think the hell why am I not getting promoted that's the secret behind it and 75% of the same recruiters would cut an interview

short if the person did not demonstrate the skills Beyond code for the job they applied for and interestingly as they make all the stats um they found out that as a software engineer you'll spend about half of your working week in meetings interacting with other people where your coding genius won't help you a lot and when I heard the number for the first time I was like

53% that's a bit high but but if you think about it it's you know it's dailies plannings reviews Retros refinements team emergency meetings and so on and so on and that adds up in the end let let it not be 53% let it be 40 but still that's a lot and uh up to now I've been speaking only about you know individuals trying to make a career

and stuff like that but skills Beyond code have another huge relevance I'd like to address the team leads in here or let's say the entrepreneurs who um employ software Engineers have you ever heard about the chaos report please tell me there have to be some who know it anybody ever heard about the chaos report okay one two three okay that's not so many let me tell you

about it the chaos report is a large study that is conducted every year it's the Standish group that screens about 5,000 IT projects worldwide on a yearly basis and what they do is they categorize the projects into three categories they tell you is the project successful is it challenged or is it failed successful means is it finished in time and in budget so as planned the way

it should be or is it finished either in time or in budget which means you already have to make a certain compromise or is it uh not even in time and not in budget or failed completely give me a guess what do you think what are the current numbers failed 8% failed 80% fa wow you're having a high confidence in our industry who are you working for

don't say it loud well actually it's not so bad 30% can be considered at successful 50% are challenged this what the way you sneak out behind you know and 20% I think it was 20 yeah 20% are failed so let these numbers sync in for a second what does it mean actually it means if if you put yourself in the shoes of a customer customer takes a

shitload of money oh by the way am I allowed to curse in here because I'm Italian I can't stop it mommy yo actually it just means that 70% of all the customers beforehand before they take their money you know they're all happy we're digit going to digitize everything and then after about in 70% of the cases they're going to be not satisfied that's up number honestly can

can you give me another industry with such bad numbers where you beforehand know that in 70% of the cases you're not going to be happy plastic surgery or if you my friend if you want to buy a car and you say yeah perfectly I'll take it in 70% of the case you'd be like n we're g to take the train today but it looks good looks good

on my insta profile now actually those numbers aren't really good I have to say but the crazy thing about the study I mean this is crazy enough but there's one more crazy thing and that's pretty much the the main reason why I'm talking to you is if you take the numbers from the past 20 years the study has been around since the mid 90s but you know

in the '90s there was no real internet so let's start from the 2000s the numbers haven't really changed they're pretty much the same for the last 20 years there has not been an improvement in the quality of IT worldwide that's crazy I mean technology is getting better and better all the time I mean how many times have you heard geez I guess how many times will you

hear in this conference that a speaker will be standing there and saying what I'm showing you now that's disruptive that's the new innovative everything will be automatic you can you know just configure something and then money comes in well spoil alert that's crap doesn't work that way actually you you even have to say it doesn't even influence and why is that so because in the end of

the day technology is a tool it's just a tool it's people making business with other people it's people working together with with other people and there's an analysis to this study as well and it always comes down to the same motives since 20 years it's miscommunication in pretty much every layer of the project and up processes between the customers between the teams especially when it's about requirements

and when problems come in but that's pretty much the problem and spin this once ahead we're in the middle of a digital Revolution right now you know we're the Pinnacle we're the the master hisory of the future and right now we're building the foundations for a digital future think of it as such a beautiful house in Venice where they build a foundations like these wooden sticks and

you build the beautiful future the houses on top so what we're doing right now is we're building a foundation where 70% of these wooden sticks are already negotiable let's say and that's not really good and I think there's a lot of room for improvement for us and probably it's not the next JavaScript library so if you don't take anything with you today except of the free drinks

for the ladies um my key message for you today is If you limit yourself to coding and Technology just alone that's not enough I'm pretty sure you're probably going to get even unhappy not only career-wise but also in your daily business because you have to interact all the time with colleagues at a certain point with bosses then with clients and by the way clients is where the

money comes from so this should be improved so my advice for you is start building up and uh I made this my mission and this is why we created The Tech Career Playbook we call it the seven rules Beyond code actually it's not even a book it's videos but it looks better you see you see this another communication thing actually just remind I'm I'm not a sales

guy I guess or sales guy would have presented this completely differently would have probably said you know we we send a guy up a mountain for seven days and he stood there alone speaking to the ghost of Steve Jobs and he came back aged seven years with a stone plate and seven rules Commandments written on it but that that's not a marketing show actually this is about

content and uh guys I would love to go through every rule of that uh with you in detail because the the rules pretty much are just a a result of of all the stuff we studied of all the interviews we conducted and that is pretty much the framework the giant area which is all about so every area goes deep of course but this is pretty much from

start to the end and as we don't have a lot of time today people taking photos go ahead it's for free don't tell the sales guy um but today unfortunately we have only uh room for some so we do this next time or maybe afterwards or you check the website if you're interested come on let's get going the first rule is called optimize your assets use your

utter potential so see you have 24 hours a day every day just like me just like Leonardo DaVinci Albert Einstein and Marie kuri okay I get it those people were special they were gifted but still there are millions of others very very successful people out there who don't have a special talent not at all but what they do have all in common is they maximize their potential

they make the best out of it they are able to make the right decisions at least they're they're not super talented for it but they have you know like a framework to do it they have they they are method methodological is it I think they know how to set the right priorities they know how to manage their time they when to say no to stuff that they

don't need it's just that they're able to Channel all their efforts to the right thing and think about it if you cannot show something like this and people think well this person has some time issues and I don't I'm not sure about these priorities how will you be trusted a team to take these decisions for them any idea which one has the biggest effect the biggest lever

what was it Health Management is it on oh yeah no it was not the one I was looking for you were right over there but actually thinking about Health Management that's another fun thing because we were talking about bigger numbers before you know in the chos report and stuff like that I recently read that 80% of all the people in the IT industry are stressed by that

job and that makes us the burnout leading industry yeah nothing to be proud about but it's 80% and there was that was also written that 65% or the the probability to run into severe mental issues or physical issues related to the job is 65% during your career 65 that's two out of three but I guess you are safe because two out of three that's the person to

the left and to the right of you and nothing can happen to you we never talk about it but actually I didn't come here to talk about health it's right that gentleman in the front said it it's really distraction handling that's such a mighty topic that it's almost a cheat you know when you're working on something and you're like totally in your focus zone like 90% And

then somebody comes in and you're distracted how long does it take for you to gain the same level of concentration again what you guess how many seconds how many minutes how many weeks very good very good so the the first Str is like like in school they know everything beforehand it's really it's 23 minutes there's a university in California it's the Irvine University and they specialized on

that and they have a nice study about it but it's really 23 minutes imagine imagine that for a whole day you start working at something something distracts you focus goes down you start to building it up hits you again goes down goes down goes down so on average during a Day translated this just means that you're not performing at your top level this means during a day

you'll be pretty much let's say at 50% and not more and the thing is that statistically we are Interrupted about every 11 minutes a day so that's pretty much 40 times a day and it makes sense I mean look at your look at your screens like emails popping up chat is popping up probably the system wants to I don't know update something colleagues come in then our

best distraction friend this by the way give me a second I'll be back what was I talking about yeah great laser show by the way no actually it's really like it's it's the dumb maker people call it as well and that's pretty much a giant problem so if you are able you know to get your focus up it's pretty much an equivalent of having like two or

three hours more a day than other people and that's just stupid doesn't matter how clever you are how good your to tools are whatever if you're not able to keep your your focus up won't bring you much we're just humans we're built like that no tool can you know solve that problem for us all right let's go to the next rule that one is a bit provocative

but it's intended to be I guess it's called take responsibility become the go-to expert in your field so look at the second part first becoming the go-to expert in your field doesn't mean you have to become the biggest expert of all times in your field because that would be kind of a stupid advice just be the best becoming the go-to expert means that no decision should pass

you by people should know that this is his or her area whatever but we have to conduct this person first beforehand before we make a decision and you get to this status by taking responsibility but friends I have to tell you I've seen many many different Industries taking responsibilities problem that's a problem we made ourselves and that's really uh I don't know a Miss thing that's happening

in our industry let me try to explain it to you if you Google right now for tech people or software Engineers You'll Always Find the same stuff you get the nerd you're looking for a software engineer super high level University expert and that's pretty much the first image that pops up in the head people the second one would be typical you know looks more realistic but it's

the locked in people you know headphones on many screens no one knows what they're doing you're just passing by like don't talk to me and the third one is you know Minority Report Matrix visual screens people pointing at something all ethnicities are present more ladies than men so that's just crap but the first two are the thing the first two pictures of course are a bit exagger

at but still if we go to the street outside people would pretty much agree but the problem with these pictures is that they signal that those people are service providers they do not look like deciders they look like somebody you rent if you should do a certain work for you hello okay and that's pretty much the problem because people tend to tell Engineers what uh how they

should do their work I hear it so often when sometimes you see software projects and you feel like who the hell made that even if you see the GU and it's like what's going on there and it's like yeah client told us how we should do it you know po told us how we should do it they said we should do it like this it nobody tells

you how you should do your job you're the expert you tell them not to do it that way can you imagine going to a doctor and Doctor sees your results and he'd be like we need an operation and You' be like no no no no we do it differently we start here take some tissue here we go like this and Dr yeah yeah sure it's not going

to happen if you have a broken car you go to car mechanic and he says your cylinders are broken and you say yeah use duct tape and we take the oil from the kitchen or whatever it's not going to happen nobody questions the experts and in our industry it happens all the time and this is pretty often the result why why you see you know why why

engineers at the end are like yeah okay I had to do it but you know I'm not responsible for it and that and that is just not okay so uh what I claim I I would even claim that a major reason for the chaos report for the bad results is this because this is when the requirements process gets up so what also happens for example and this

is stuff we're taught I mean pretty much everybody knows Simon sync right the Golden Circle stuff from YouTube you know I've seen so many presentations where people uh put a reference to this where they be like you start with the why with a great vision and then the what kind of falls into place and the how just happens such crap the how just happens that when you're

building technical projects the how is really really really important so your job our job should basically be owning the how process from start to end and nobody tells you what to do in there and the next step and that's the taking responsibility step is influencing the what and the why first of all you have to understand the what and the why the to know what you're building

you're not just getting a list of stuff that you should program down it's like you you need to go there and tell them H stop I I got what you want to do I got why you want to do it but I have like an advice for you we do it this way because you know better how to realize stuff they do so and that is pretty

much a thing that you know I saw it myself my career all the time and that is a thing that many people came up with when they said something in that chain is broken sometimes I don't know the the deciders get too vocal and they talk you down and at a certain point you be like yeah it okay we just do it but then at the end

of the day you have to live with the software and after some time people will say like why did you up the software so much and this is relevant for many categories imagine at a certain point in time you will run into refactoring problems or even rewritings you'll run into some Innovation stuff your project at a certain point might become a product which is a completely different

approach and those are the things where you need to step in and say okay okay okay I take the responsibility for that even if it's sometimes you know a bit more work but at the end of the day you're protecting yourself and you're protecting your own work and the thing you need to do there is you don't need to be able you know to to explain everybody

how it's done but your job at the table at the decider table is to make the people understand the problem in their language and make them understand the benefits of the solution because then people be like okay got it convinced me it's up to you that's the budget go ahead I will not interfere anymore let's make an example how you can explain something to a non-technical person

in a language they understand I found in in this list and there's much more I always found one of the um most complex problems to explain to non-technical people is technical depth the one in the upper right corner I found that 99.9% of non-technical people have no idea what technical Dept is and I also found that pretty much let's say 20% of it people don't know what

technical depbt is no one's going to be exposed just a short ramp up this is the moment when your software becomes hard to maintain you know when you think well okay Innovation speed's going down no one wants to work with it and anym it gets buggy and at a certain point You' be like w we we really need to do something here The problem is you can

measure it it people will understand it you got the tools the metrics you get your cyclomatic complexity or whatsoever but if you go to decider and they are important because they have to uh give the goal for the funding and if you go to them and say like yeah listen our cyclomatic complexity is 15 need to be nine they'd be like yeah sure it's your thing it's

not my thing so what you need to do is you need to to translate it into their language and what is the language of a decider it's money has always been money and it's actually pretty easy to translate everything into the language of your certain audience let's give this a try you start a project right and at the beginning of every project you start Gathering your requirements

at a certain point you got a scope of the project and you reach pretty much yeah an overview this is this let's call them my ideal requirements and then you start start estimating you start making a burn down until a point where you might probably have the ideal software you might even start developing but at a certain point something happens like always an event somebody has a

great idea let's do it like this oh there's a conference let's release earlier let's make an MVP or I don't know who needs tests anyway they're too expensive something happens all the time and what happens is you release earlier probably not in terms of time but for sure in terms of distance because what you know is how much time you are away from your ideal software and

as we all know time is money so this can be calculated and everybody who knows a bit about numbers the economical things will understand okay that's a bit that's a loan that's a credit we took from the bank to pay off our mortgage and you understand we you're having a mortgage if you're not able to pay the thing will collapse so if you want to maintain this

thing and not you know have a rewrite after three years you must eliminate technical depth people will understand and what they also understand if they're good with numbers credits and Loans create interest and interest grows exponentially so the longer you wait the more expensive it gets you see there's no no word about complexity or whatsoever nobody cares but everybody who makes financial decisions will understand that's not

an economical problem a good situation so it's pretty easy to you know translate stuff like that in in certain moments but you have to know how obviously all right I don't know how far we are I got no clock anyway let's go to a final rule you're still awake very good very good and I don't I don't see so many of you living the multitasking lie of

uh reading about the Ukraine war and watching this both at 50% and your distraction level so good for you the next one is called um Bridge the tag language Gap be a compelling Communicator actually this rule is pretty much about basic communication and actually I guess it's widely accepted that communication is pretty much the most important skill you can ever possess being able to convey your thought

your ideas your opinions and ultimately your emotions to other people for sure guarantees you greater success in pretty much every area of your life on the downside this also means not being able to showing sufficient uh communication skills means you might not make a higher career because that's an thing actually I must say I grew up in Germany as I said and now I heard that a

few people have communication at University did you have communication in school we didn't I guess in Germany you just learned that one communicates and the rest obeys you know this is what we learn come on I'm Italian I can't make jokes um no actually it's I I think it's really a shame that communication is not taught because you know I learned so much crap in school honestly

really I've learned so much crap that I that I never that I'm never going to use again but communication takes place all the time all the time and miscommunication is the root of ah thank you miscommunication is the root of so much evil it be it spoken be it written be it graphical everything is communicating and also understanding you know listening skills that's really a skill usually

we do not listen to understand we listen to reply while somebody is speaking you're already making up your mind and thinking about your answer you know this happens so often some I don't know somebody tells listen um I went to Cuba I was so beautiful I have to tell you about Cuba we started the journey at Barcelona and the other person be like Barcelona I like this

city it was really cool yeah I was there too and the story is interrupted you know the story was about Cuba so this is miscommunication and its finest and it happens all the time that's a hugee topic and also for us it's it's a huge topic but I cannot go into it in detail I just brought you three things some uh little reminders and I want to

tell you something about non-verbal stuff about knowing your audience and about miscommunication in general because we are miscommunicating all the time and that is because communication depends on perspective it's hard to tell right from wrong except for mathematics but for the rest you know his opinion there's perspectives I guess I guess you have husbands you have wives you have parents I had a beautiful conversation about what's

right or wrong see that's kind of difficult so that's the first thing it's perspectives the second thing is ambiguity in language as well for example if I tell you um I came here today by car and I parked my car out out side in the car parking lot so I said car three times you're already starting to creating an image in your head what car is red

maybe it's black maybe it's blue it's a sports car family car big car small car old car new car electric car is it a truck I don't know is it important maybe because that's the first image you're creating upon and it tells you something it tells you something about me too and as we're speaking more and more images come to your head and the more we're talking

the more we're distancing each other from the reality and this leads up to a long chain of whatever at a certain point expectations come in by the way the word disappointment would not exist if the word expectation did not exist because that's the only thing you can disappoint and expectations are not real we produce them and being able to understand that process and from time to time

interfere leads to being way way way more precise and precision my friends Precision is the we need in our industry and therefore it is a really really important skill from time to time are we are we on the same level are we talking about the same stuff so um and just think about you know we have so many words if non-technical people come in and you say

yeah I clicked on my mouse to store my data in the cloud to protect them them from a virus behind the firewall people be like what's going on had a situation there was an AI project and I I was coder back then pretty much in the beginnings and the manager came in and he was like what's taking so long I said what it's like yeah the resources

and stuff like has taken so long we got a meeting and I said no no no no this takes time we're training a model training a model takes time and he was like training model why do you get to do the fun stuff I can train a model still got it you know and this is it specific just imagine for sure in a meeting you'll be talking

about layers and modules and interfaces can can you imagine where people might be drifting and this problem especially is called knowing audience so when we're talking amongst each other we could have many presentations here will be very precise they'll be about problems about solutions to problems about the details of the solutions about ideas about code and that's fine and whenever sees uh somebody sees a presentation like

this and and says well that's really good you have to show it to the rest of company show it to the other departments that's actually a up idea because normally when you show something to somebody you have to know in in advance who are you talking to what is their level of understanding and what is their level of expectation because you don't want to steal their time

and put them somewhere else so what you need to do is you need to to to steamline your your information to everybody you're talking to for example if you're showing something like this to marketing what are you going to do with it marketing is not even interested in features marketing doesn't work like that you don't sell features you sell benefit you know they have to create stories

they have to make someone understand getting a feeling for what's what's coming after that and they have to know this in relation to the competition which they by the way don't know because you're the experts you know what your application or your code or I don't know whatever is strong in and you should know about the uh competition as well and make them understand or management for

example if you go to management they they're here to decide you know they want to make decisions they need numbers facts they need risk assessment they don't want to hear about problems you are there to create Solutions solons for problems this is why you are hired and interestingly clients are looking for competence and Trust that's the most important value for them and that makes sense I mean

put yourself again in the shoes of the client you're taking a bunch of money and you have to give it to some people you don't know doing stuff you don't know anything about most of the time someone has to digitize some analog business which is still pretty common they go there they find some people with headphones on pointing on their screens and they have to give them

a whole lot of money and trusting them with their business and how do you how do you trust how would you measure trust communication is one thing how do you mean it so you mean direct face to face and that's the point absolutely the gentleman said communication over time showing that you know what you're doing but pretty much you cannot show beforehand you know before you make

the deal so reading fake reviews online doesn't work trust at a certain point is I want to know this person I want to see it I want to have the handshake I don't know I want to feeling for it and all that is nonverbal topic everything is nonverbal but of word everything is communicating the way I'm standing here is communicating the way you sitting there is communicating

with me this room is communicating that's that's one imagine imagine I would say the same stuff the same stuff I have on this slide in a different way imagine I would be standing here because the slide is communicating as well obviously even if you don't think about it imagine I was standing here and playing play some PowerPoint karoke with you like Engineers usually look for details for

problems and their Solutions ideas are being assessed questions no Marketing sales Val it's pretty much exactly the same I just said so the content is completely the same but it's transported way and it tells you something you're assessing all the time all the time and the and the point I want to give you here if you're neglecting the power of non-verbal communication uh communication you you run

the risk to you know uh undermine your own expertise always have this in mind we we are great experts you know we know a sh a really important thing about the world and there's not so many about us and we're creating the future so we know something and people have to get the feeling for that they can trust us and let us do what we want to

do and if you don't do this you run the risk of undermining your expertise or selling yourself short and that pretty much means you're packaging a high quality product namely yourself in some paper that no one would ever buy and before I finish this a sensitive one I don't want to insult nobody but I'm pretty sure people might not like me after that one but I don't

care because that's your problem I know we all like our goodies and our freebies and that's fine I'm not here to what even cutting the sound no yeah getting aggressive I can scream no really I'm not here to tell you what to wear I would never do that actually I would advise you be as authentic as you can all the time because it's the best thing but

you are assessing just like everybody's assessing if I was wearing a suit just like Ricky did if Ricky and I go to the to the engineering department where you know where code is being done and daily work is being done you'd be like what are those schmocks doing here and you can you're right it somehow doesn't fit the area and when it's about decision making and stuff

like that what's signals are you sending put yourself back in the shoes of the customer sitting there maybe scared maybe thinking damn this has to go right I'm inventing 100K into some people 100K is so much money and they do not even pay for the clothes so what signals are you sending if you wear something that looks like it has been worn like a hundred times and

it happens so often so often have we have we taken like the the super experts with to the meeting coming in with flip-flops feeling like Mark Zuckerberg guess what you're not he's a billionaire genius that's not the best role model it's like I should lose some weight I should do like Arnold Schwarzenegger that's not going to work so think about it than think about the signals you
