Why 72px Stream Deck Panels Beat Wall Displays in Incidents

About this talk

Wall displays in operations centers don't help engineers solve incidents — and the reason is neuroscience. In this talk, a community practitioner explains why, and demos a working solution: a Grafana plugin for the Elgato Stream Deck that shows live stat and gauge panels on 72×72px buttons sitting in your peripheral vision on your desk.

Your fovea, the dense spot on your retina responsible for sharp detail, covers only 2 degrees of your visual field and makes up 0.16% of your retina — roughly the size of your thumbnail at arm's length. Your brain uses 50% of its visual cortex to process just that 2-degree window, updated by rapid eye movements called saccades. Peripheral vision is wide but low-resolution, wired specifically to detect motion, sudden change, and contrast. Wall displays fight this — your peripheral vision sweeps downward over your desk, not upward to the wall.

The proposed hack: put monitoring on your desk, at desk level, where your peripheral vision naturally scans. The 72×72px screens on each Stream Deck button are exactly thumbnail-sized by design. The Grafana plugin uses the Grafana HTTP API to pull stat and gauge panels from your existing dashboards and render them on buttons. Tapping any button opens the full dashboard. Keep 5–7 controls max (Miller's Law) to signal when something needs attention — not to diagnose it. Token storage uses additional encryption; full source is on GitHub.

The goal: shift from the adrenaline spike of an unexpected alert to catching a trend in your periphery before it becomes an incident, and being able to quote live stats in a late-night incident call without breaking eye contact with the camera.
