The OSS-ential understanding of open source community health and metrics

This talk, presented by Ijeoma Onwuka from the MLOps Community, delves into the evaluation of open source community health and metrics beyond conventional indicators like GitHub stars and commit activity. It challenges the assumption that high visibility equates to true project vitality, revealing risks such as maintainer burnout and inadequate governance. The speaker introduces two essential dimensions of community health—sustainability, which focuses on factors like contributor experience and documentation quality, and survivability, assessing a project's resilience against disruption. Utilizing a real-world case study, the session demonstrates how certain projects may appear active while being structurally vulnerable to risks. Additionally, the talk introduces the CHAOSS framework, offering standardized metrics for analyzing open source project health and emphasizing the importance of contextual interpretation in metrics analysis.
